Authentic Movement for the Wounded Healer

The mythological image of the Wounded Healer is very widespread. Psychologically it means not only that the wounded have a healer within themselves, but also that there is a wounded in the healer. The healer and the wounded are two aspects of the same archetype. However, when this two-pole archetype is split inside the therapist, the psychic process is blocked. When as therapists we think that weakness, illness, and wounds have nothing to do with us, we become only-a-therapist and we leave our clients to be only-patients. But for healing to happen, as therapists, we need to be able to experience wounding as an existential possibility in ourselves to constellate the healing factor in our clients.

Structure:

This 4hr workshop is an experiential training (4CEs). Teachings are appropriate for healthcare professionals as well as the general public. Healthcare professionals will be able to incorporate the tools and practices offered in this program in beneficial ways to clients or patients.

We will start by learning the principles of the Authentic Movement discipline, then put them into practice. We will do this first in individual explorations then working in dyads to embrace both poles of the archetype of the wounded healer within us.

In the individual exploration, we will initially use the expressive arts to bring more awareness to our wounded pole. Then, we will go to an Authentic Movement exploration to connect with our inner healing potential.

While working in dyads, we will change roles between the witness and the mover. As movers, we open ourselves to be seen as we are. As witnesses, we are present with the other in a compassionate and non-judgmental manner.

In our closing circle, we will honor our vivid experience and share our thoughts on how to wisely use our healing power.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

1) Explain how the two-pole archetype of the wounded healer appears in the therapeutic relationship

2) Describe 3 key aspects of the Authentic Movement practice when used in therapy

3) Identify when and how to use the Authentic Movement principles in clinical practice

Our work as mental health professionals requires us to constantly embody authentic caring, strength, healthy boundaries, and patience that I hope we can also give and receive in this respectful community.
